This is arguably the best game reserve in Kenya and may be in the whole world and home to the 7th wonder of the world.Consisting of over 200sq miles of open plains,woodlands and riverine forests,migration of the wildebeests occurs annually across the Mara River.The vast grassland plains are scattered with herds of zebras,girraffes topis,the acacia forests are abound with monkeys,troops of baboons and abundant birdlife.Mara and Talek rivers are brimming with hippos and crocodiles.
Each year, the mara plays host to the worlds greatest spectacle,the migration of wildebeests from serengeti plains.From july to november,the promise of rain and fresh grass in the north brings more than 1.3 million wilderbeests and zebras in a single massive herd.At the mara river they mass together at the river banks before finally plunging forward in to the raging waters,creating a frenzy as the fight the raging currents and hungry crocodiles.The migration brings new life to the mara not just the regeneration of grassland but to the predators as well who follow the herd.The mara has been home to the king of the jungle(lions) as well as other predators and scavengers with cheetars and jackals a common sight. This spectacular event occurs between the months of July through to October. The panorama sometimes resembles a mural on the wall where different species of animals are put together in one location.
Its possible to see a variety of animals including the big five in one day. These would also include; topi, zebra, Wildeerbeests, lions, giraffes, buffallos, elands, elephants, cheetahs, leopards and many others. The reserve still hosts the Maasai community who live in the park together with the wild.Lying at about 2000mtrs above sea level the park has varying type of vegetation with savanna plains to the south and high mountainous and forested western side to the plains of Serengeti.
In terms of accomodation, Maasai mara is the probably the best serviced park offering various budget accomodation to the most exclusive camps and lodges.The park is very ideal for game drives and some lodges and camps offer walking and baloon safaris.
Wildlife move freely in and out of the reserve through the neighbouring maasai lands.Outside the boundaries of the reserve there are small community camps which offer trekking, horse riding and other forms of safaris
The loita Hills and Ngurumani escarpments both considered sacred to the maasai offers high forested trekking opportunities to adventurous tourists.
